What is the Scheme & What do I get out of it?

The scheme is an opportunity you can’t afford to miss - read on to find out why...

The JST Youth Leadership @ Sea Scheme is a unique challenge on a tall ship for all adventure seekers out there.

  • Firstly to be selected for the scheme you must be 16 - 25 years old.

  • You will spend a week or two on a tall ship, working as an active member of the crew, day and night.

  • You will experience teamwork and challenges and develop new friendships.

  • You don’t need any sailing experience.

  • During the voyage you will have a mentor that will explain, assist and evaluate you and to ensure that the scheme works for you!

  • Whilst on board you will have the opportunity to shadow a Watchleader and/or Bosun’s Mate.

  • All participants will be given a certificate as a record of your achievement, reference report (both of which will be useful additions to your CV) and a T-Shirt on completion of the voyage.

  • By the end of the scheme you will, we’re sure, feel a great sense of achievement, made loads of new friends, developed key life skills, had a lot of fun, on voyages of 5 days or more you will complete your Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential and of course it will look great on your CV!

How Does The Scheme Work?

·         Once you have registered your interest by completing the booking form online the JST will undergo a selection process by reviewing each application on an individual basis.

·         You will be told the outcome of this selection within three weeks and be sent relevant information about your voyage, funding and timings.

·         The permanent crew will identify potential Watchleaders (50% discount on following voyages) and / or Bosun’s Mates (free voyage in return for lots of hard work!) at the end of your voyage.

·         The scheme is funded primarily by The Leadership Trust Foundation and each year we produce a report for the Trust on the success of the scheme. When you have returned from your adventure please send us any copies of your diaries, logs reports or stories, that you write about your experiences on board, as they are very useful when writing the report and for use in promotional literature. Submissions are required by three weeks after the end of your voyage. The submission of a report is part of the criteria that participants have to complete when receiving funding assistance, through the Leadership @ Sea scheme.

How much does it cost?

The cost of each voyage can be found on the voyage programme brochure or in the voyages section of the site.

  • If you are selected to take part in the JST Youth Leadership @ Sea Scheme you will qualify for a bursary of up to £300 towards the cost of your chosen voyage, the rest you will have to raise yourself. To ensure that you do qualify for the scheme a keen emphasis on your personal fundraising must be expressed. To find out more about how you can raise funds ask for a copy of our flyer ‘fundraising tips and tricks’.

  • If you manage to raise more than the cost of your voyage you will be able to use this towards a future voyage, or to sponsor another young person to take part.

  • If for any reason you are unable to meet your targets during fundraising we will consider additional funding on an individual basis (we will require evidence of your fundraising efforts that have been unsuccessful).
