Gloucestershire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs

Gloucestershire YFC is part of the National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs, which has over 35,000 members. Gloucestershire YFC has been going strong some 67 years on. The YFC movement started up in the form of calf clubs and agricultural societies to enhance knowledge of the methods of farming, which in some cases could give you openings to farm tenancies.

YFC has moved on from its early beginnings, and has considerably broadened its Competitions Programme.  YFC still endeavours to keep the traditional competitions such as hedging, ploughing, poultry boning and of course stock judging, but now there are lots more such as cookery, craft and design, computer skills, public speaking, dancing, speed eating and even animals made of fruit and vegetables!  This year we have made and flown kites.

The current membership of Gloucestershire is about 360, which is approximately 50/50 lads and lasses.  The aim of the federation is to encourage young people from predominantly rural areas to meet, socialise and have fun whilst learning through the programmes that are offered.  YFC are run by the members for the members, which is an excellent learning process.  There are 16 clubs in Gloucestershire who meet weekly and who not only prepare for competitions, but go on outside visits, learn new skills and have the opportunity to travel through out National Young Farmers Club Discovery Programme as well as having fun!
